Repair vs Replace

Repair vs Replace: When It’s Worth Fixing Your Laptop or PC

A slow PC, a cracked screen, or a laptop that won’t hold charge the way it used to. At some point, almost everyone asks the same question: is this worth fixing, or should I just replace it? It’s rarely as obvious as it feels in the moment, and getting it wrong either way costs you money. Here’s how to actually work it out.

The Repair-First Mindset Is Growing

More people are choosing to repair rather than replace their devices than in previous years, and it’s not hard to see why. A repair is almost always cheaper than a new machine, it avoids the hassle of transferring everything across to a new device, and it keeps a perfectly good laptop out of landfill. The trend is strong enough that manufacturers and regulators across Europe are now being pushed to make repairs easier, not harder — spare parts, repairability, the works. Replacing a device is sometimes genuinely the right call, but it shouldn’t be the default just because it feels simpler.

When Repair Usually Makes Sense

  • The laptop or PC is under 3 years old. Most failures at this age are a single component, not the whole machine giving up.
  • Only one thing is actually wrong — a battery that won’t hold charge, a cracked screen, a noisy or full hard drive, a dead keyboard. Single-fault repairs are usually quick and affordable.
  • It still does everything you need it to once that one issue is sorted. There’s no reason to spend on new hardware you don’t actually need.
  • You’ve got files, software licences, or a setup that would be a hassle to rebuild from scratch on a new machine.

When Replacement Might Be The Better Call

  • Multiple things are failing at once — that’s often a sign the whole machine is reaching end of life, not just one part.
  • The repair cost is close to (or more than) the price of a comparable replacement.
  • The hardware itself can no longer keep up with what you need it to do, regardless of what’s repaired — an old processor or too little RAM for modern software, for example.
  • There’s been physical damage beyond a straightforward part swap, such as significant liquid damage or a badly cracked chassis.

Get An Honest Opinion Before You Decide

The honest answer is that it depends on the specific fault, the age of the device, and what you actually need it to do — which is exactly why it’s worth getting a real diagnosis rather than guessing. We’ll always tell you plainly if a repair isn’t worth it, and if it is, you only pay if we fix it.
